Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency specifies the skills and knowledge required to:assess the size and scope of concreting tasksidentify the resources required to complete the tasks on time and within budgetcommunicate requirements to team members in preparation for concreting work to commence.It applies to concreters working as members of a team with at least a moderate degree of autonomy. They would be expected to complete routine activities without close supervision.Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency in all states and territories except Tasmania. Relevant state and territory regulatory authorities should be consulted to confirm these requirements.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Determine requirements for concreting tasks.
  • Review site plans, and evaluate size and complexity of concreting tasks.
  • Assess site access, egress information and traffic management plan, and negotiate additional provisions or changes as required.
  • Assess provisions for site storage and amenities, and negotiate additional provisions or changes as required.
  • Assess work specifications, and identify and sequence project stages to meet project timelines for completion.
  • Assess concurrent work of other construction teams and establish or confirm communication channels.
       
Element: Plan for concreting tasks.
  • Assess type of concrete and curing time in predicted weather conditions for each pour and schedule tasks to meet project requirements.
  • Review work health and safety (WHS) andenvironmental requirements, and apply to planning.
  • Develop or adapt safe work method statements (SWMSs) for individual tasks in accordance with workplace procedures and safety requirements.
  • Assess potential hazards and contingencies and develop risk controls.
  • Calculate dimensions of each concrete pour and calculate, document and source material in preparation for work to commence on time and on budget.
  • Identify, document and source plant, tools and equipment required for each project stage in line with task schedule to ensure availability on site.
       
Element: Determine and source labour for concreting tasks.
  • Determine specialised skill requirements for different task stages and assess skills of available team members to identify skill shortages.
  • Recruit additional team members with required skills within required timeframe to ensure prompt start to work.
  • Allocate team members to tasks and document human resource requirements for all task stages.
       
Element: Brief team members about concreting tasks.
  • Arrange or conduct site tour and induction for site safety and environmental requirements in accordance with task and workplace requirements.
  • Explain and discuss details of task allocations and scheduling, and confirm team understanding of work requirements.
  • Explain concurrent work of other construction teams and communication channels to team members, and confirm their understanding.
  • Explain risk controls and provisions for dealing with risks, hazards, and contingencies to team members and confirm their understanding.
  • Encourage team members to clarify work requirements and to suggest process improvements at all stages.

Assessment Tasks

Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.
